E Azarbaijan prov, Aug 3, IRNA -- President Mohammad
Khatami
here Monday afternoon underlined the need for promotion
of research
in all areas in the country.
Addressing a meeting held at the biotechnological
research center
of the provincial agriculture jihad department, he
said promotion of
research is a major task of the Ministry of Science,
Research
and Technology.
President Khatami further praised great efforts made
by the
government in the areas of biotechnology, nanotechnology,
information technology and communications.
Stressing on the importance of a powerful Iran, he
said
safeguarding the country`s independence and freedom
without power is
impossible.
The power is not needed for violating rights of others,
however,
power is needed for establishment of justice, peace
and tranquility
throughout the globe, he stated.
As to efforts made in the past 25 years to gain access
to
science and technology in Iran, the president said
the Islamic Iran
should be developed and powerful.
In related developments, President Khatami addressed
senior
staff of universities and higher education centers
in East
Azarbaijan province Monday evening.
As to the existing problems in the country, he said
many of
these problems are rooted in weaknesses in economic
infrastructures.
The government is interested in progress and development
of the
country in scientific fields and will do all within
its power to
that end, Khatami said.
He further underlined the need for establishment of
links between
universities and other sections of the society.
President Khatami arrived in this northwestern provincial
capital city on Monday to inaugurate over 400 development
projects in
different parts of the province. Jolfa`s Free Trade
Zone is to be
established in the presence of President Khatami.
On the last day of his visit to the province on Wednesday,
the
chief executive will attend the Constitution conference
in Tabriz.
The Constitution conference marks the 98th anniversary
of the
1906 Constitutional Movement and is to be attended
by a number of
intellectuals and officials.
