Nano Paints on Display at the 2004 National Hardware Show

LAS VEGAS, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2004 National Hardware Show, underway at the Sands Convention Center here, has joined forces this year with the Paint and Decorating Retailers Association (PDRA) to feature hundreds of exhibitors devoted to household paints, stains and wallpaper, many on the leading edge of trends in the category.

"Paint continues to be homeowners' top do-it-yourself project," said Rob Cappiello, industry vice president and show manager, National Hardware Show. "Our partnership with the PDRA brings the best paint and home decorating products to buyers in one convenient place."
Key industry drivers include:

* Espresso, mauve, chocolate, purple gray, dark brown and deep maroon
dominate consumers' color palettes.
* Red is on the rise, creating interiors that are strong, passionate and
inspiring. Experts say it hasn't been hotter since 1998.
* For women, black and pink is the new combination for opulent interiors.
* Kids can enjoy a new glow-in-the-dark paint that is luminous for up to
15 minutes after the lights go out. Teens can choose from metallic
shades and paints that create a denim effect.
* A new prototype paint uses nanotechnology to mix microscopic sensors
into paint that would allow walls to react to changes in temperature
or moisture by changing colors.
* Wallpaper is making a comeback. The U.S. demand for wallcoverings as
an alternative to paint is expected to rise 5.7 percent per year
through 2007, growing to $2.5 billion in sales. The hottest trends in
wallpaper -- 3-D designs and textures that create excitement for the
room.
* New tools that make painting and wallpapering easier are hot at retail.
Tools that speed taping around trim, windows and fixtures are selling
well, as are electronic measuring tapes and portable laser levels.
* The paint applicator category also remains strong. Applicator sales
are up 3 percent to 5 percent, as homeowners continue to buy and
renovate homes. Rollers are gaining in popularity on brushes, as
consumers look for products that speed up the job.

Some of the exciting new paint-related products on display at the 2004 National Hardware Show include:

* The new Alla Prima painting technique from Padco (www.padco.com) is a
brush application of three colors in one coat of paint. The Padco
paint tray has three paint cups that load the 10-inch PadBRUSH(R) with
three different colored bands of paint.

* Pratt & Lambert Paints (www.prattandlambert.com) has reformulated its
Accolade(R) premium line of interior and exterior coatings. The
paint's unique stain-resistant formula provides deep, rich colors and
continued washability, while maintaining its original appearance; the
paint comes with a lifetime warranty.

* A manufacturing innovation from MicroBlend Technologies
(www.microblendtechnologies.com) will revolutionize how paint is
produced and sold in the future. The process creates a point-of-sale
paint and tint dispenser in the retail paint outlet, which now can
produce and tint in countless color palettes any quality grade finish
of interior and exterior latex paint -- at the push of a button.

* For design made easy, Tarantelli Designs (www.tarantellidesigns.com)
offers peel and stick wallpaper borders and decorative decals with
beautiful handpainted designs. Created by artist Paula Tarantelli,
the collection features vines, scenic murals, sunflowers, floral
borders and other designs. Sizes range from accents to complete wall
coverage.

from Watercolor Walls (www.cloudwash.com). The complete kit includes
everything homeowners need to create the soft, sunny look of blue
skies, fluffy clouds and dreamy creatures. Comes with step-by-step
